Get the engineer's reward after the scales task
The clearest documented DREADMOOR demo source of Scraps of Knowledge is John the Fifth's reward after you obtain Chromatic Scales. Complete the Softgrazer processing task, return to him and follow the conversation. He supplies scraps so you can study hull protection and the upgraded engine.
The demo-labelled Mr. Feudal player experience records this reward and additional loose scraps near dry-dock equipment. The official DREADMOOR Steam page describes forgotten blueprints and scavenged resources as part of vessel and equipment progression.
Reach the reward through the settlement chain
John does not hand over this blueprint reward when you first arrive. The documented route first repairs his still, opens the dry dock, restores the dock's equipment and cleans and repairs the boat.
The merchants then give you the Wind-up Tin blueprint and ask for three Softgrazers. Craft the lure, catch the fish and process them into Chromatic Scales. Speak to John again to reach the scraps reward and the instruction to study the two ship upgrades.
This provides a concrete progression source rather than requiring you to find an unconfirmed farming loop. If you are still at the still-repair stage, continue that quest before looking for this later reward.
Search the dock and nearby exploration areas
The demo recording includes picking up Scraps of Knowledge around the dry-dock upgrade area. Check the accessible equipment and work areas while gathering components for the hull task.
An older CrypticFox playtest also shows torn pages found through exploration and offered by merchants. Its terminology, quest sequence and prices belong to that earlier build. They do not confirm a current-demo merchant price or a guaranteed source that refreshes indefinitely.
Treat loose pickups as exploration opportunities, not a fixed total for every location. The supplied demo material does not establish every scrap location, a respawn timer or a method to generate unlimited points.
Spend scraps on the blueprint the quest requires
Open the upgrade tree with your current control prompt and select the relevant blueprint. Learning a blueprint and crafting its component are separate actions: the scraps unlock the knowledge, while the workbench or lathe uses materials to make the item.
For John's upgrade sequence, identify the hull-protection and upgraded-engine blueprints by name. The subsequent work happens in the dry dock, with the boat raised for installation. Researching another branch does not automatically complete those objectives.
Do not assume the standard engine is the upgraded engine simply because both appear in the crafting list. Read the active task and blueprint before spending materials, then follow the installation and report-back steps.
FAQ
When does John give me Scraps of Knowledge?
In the documented demo, after you obtain Chromatic Scales from processing the requested Softgrazers and return to discuss upgrades.
Can I find scraps outside quest rewards?
The demo recording includes loose scraps near the dry-dock equipment. It does not provide a complete location list or guaranteed respawn route.
Does studying a blueprint automatically install the upgrade?
No. You still need to craft the component with materials and install it using the appropriate equipment and slot.
